Video Games

If somehow you’ve managed to avoid video games up until this point, you either do not have a child over the age of 6 or you have an iron will. Though however you’ve managed to avoid video games, if you are a mission to buy one and need to learn what’s available, how to get value from them and get the most for your money, then read on.

Video games are played on game systems that require a TV or screen with an available audio and video input. If you are able to hook up a VCR or DVD player to your television screen, then you can hook up a game system. There are three major manufacturers of game systems- Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft. They each manufacture their own systems, all of which have their own distinctive features. Choosing one is based on only a couple of factors – price range, title availability, and desired functions.

Price range is up to you. They do vary in price, but not like new cars do. Title availability simply means checking to see what video games are available for what system. Some video games are available for all systems, while others were developed and licensed only for one system. Nintendo, for example, has its own line of licensed characters and video games featuring these characters will only be available for their system.

Further, depending on what you want in a system, the available functions of each system can play a role in choosing the right one. Do you want the system to play video games and DVDs? Do you want the option to connect the system online to play against friends? Do you want the system to support 4 controllers for 4 players and if so, are you willing to spend the extra money for the hardware accessories necessary to do so? These are all questions you may ask yourself when selecting a system and each system will have its own functions and available hardware accessories, so take everything into consideration.

Once you’ve selected a system, you can begin to choose video games that appeal to you and your kids. Learn the ESRB ratings of video games if you have children and choose age appropriate games. Be weary of games that are simultaneously released with the newest movie as some of them are rushed in the design phase to be ready for release with a movie. The best way to know if a game has long term playing value is to rent it before you buy. Nearly every video rental store has a selection of video games available for rent.

Selecting a game system and video games can be fun, especially if the whole family is excited about it. Video games don’t necessarily rot children’s minds, as some debate. They can build hand-eye coordination and problem solving skills. The only way video games become a problem for kids is if you fail to monitor the games they play and limit their playing time to a reasonable amount. A common sensical approach is all that is necessary.
